Going to therapy can be a great tool on the path to healing, but it can be difficult for an individual to know that it is time to try therapy. Therapy is the treatment when suffering a mental illness or mental health condition, but that is not the only reason one might consider attending. Although there are some signs that it may be time to start therapy, they can be hard to identify. Learning which signs to look for can help determine the solution and resolve the concern earlier.

As a loved one who may suspect someone could be when struggling with mental illness, a clear sign is the symptoms getting worse. While this may seem obvious, detecting symptoms may be difficult for the individual going through the emotional hardship. When the symptoms disrupt a daily routine and affect one's ability to perform everyday tasks, it is time to contact a therapist. Trusted professionals are trained to recognize these symptoms and treat anxiety, depression or any other mental illness with care. Therapists provide their clients with coping skills, trusted resources and the correct course of treatment to ensure the path of healing is achieved.

Starting therapy may also be needed if you find yourself standing still in some aspect of your life with no resolution in sight. There will naturally be periods in life when we are at a standing, and it does not necessarily have to be a negative. When you have made efforts to change your behaviour and still find yourself stuck, that may be when it is time to consult a professional. Your therapist can help you spot negative behaviours and patterns that may hold you back from becoming the best version of yourself.

The ability to recover from a stressor can also be a clear sign it’s time to try therapy. For instance, if an individual with a healthy mindset gets into a fight with a family member, they will have the skills, resources and overall capacity to overcome the altercation and grow from the event quicker than someone who is in a negative mental state. Setbacks are completely normal, but the key is knowing how to overcome the challenges.

There are many other reasons for someone to seek out therapy and believe it is time to get the help they need. Opening yourself up to extra help can be difficult because of personal stigma. While the conversation around mental health has greatly increased in the past couple of decades, some may still unknowingly believe they are not applicable. Admitting that there is something wrong is the first step to recovery. No matter how incomparable the challenge may be, know that no problem is too small if the result is healing.
